It has been awhile since I have been in touch with AHRS clients directly with regard to an update, and usually I wait until the end of each quarter in this regard. However, I want to get some FREE parts and a few adjustments to my BetSelector compatible system clients now rather than wait to the end of March.

The results from these FREE system parts will not be officially included in the system results until the start of next quarter given I have not had time to get the suggested additions and changes to you until now. However, any selections of value that are produced from these FREE parts, such as today's expert FREE horse racing tip, and a number of other selections I gave away as FREE tips last month, will be included in the subscription service ( PlaceGetters subscription services) from now.

An interesting comparison

Here is an interesting comparison and observation … at least I think it is!

I am always checking around to look for ways to improve my services, and deliver better results to my clients. I am also constantly looking at what others are offering in this regard.

So when I received an email from PuntersParadise telling of the great profits made by ‘Spartacus the tipster’ I was interested. Particularly as the headline read “Spartacus breaks the $30,000 profit barrier!” That is an enticing profit target to have. So I checked it out and clicked on the link to take a look.

Not to detract from the great achievement – and my congratulations to Spartacus and his followers - but in perspective that is 1 year of trading starting with a $10,000 bank it appears. Well, actually, the website does not suggest the size of bank to start with, but as the profit calculation they give is based on a wager of $100 per selection for the win to achieve that target, I would guess a starting bank of $10,000 with such a low strike rate would be safest. Possibly the bank required would be more than that, given that in 2009 his tips suffered a $12,500 loss from 1,225 bets made. (I noted that he started with a fresh bank again at the beginning of 2011 to attain that $30,000 profit so in reality the initial bank was wiped out during 2009.)

Now, on the positive side – and a point Spartacus missed or perhaps the limitations of the PuntersParadise website means he cannot highlight a better banking strategy – but an each-way betting strategy on an accumulative bank would have given him an exponentially better result.

I went through the exercise of analyzing the 3,403 bets he had between the 6th of January, 2010 and the 4th of February, 2012. (Yes, that is not a misprint – three thousand four hundred and three bets! I have had that many bets over the past 10 years, but each to his own. He makes a profit, and that is all the really matters.) And if you go on to subscribe to his tips, at $199 per month, please do so via my link so I benefit a little from the introduction.

I would, of course, prefer you to subscribe to my services at just $199 for 10-weeks, (that fee level will increase shortly now that I have seen people are willing to pay more than twice the fee for less profitable results). But diversity is a good thing, so don’t be afraid to test the waters – just watch out for fast moving grey objects!

I used the same starting bank and wagering parameters to analyse the selections that Spartacus gave his clients as I recommend for my PG MBA | FTJ subscription service selections. One critical difference is that there were only 173 selections on my service between the 1st of January, 2010 and the 31st of December, 2011 – with another 26 so far this year with 12 of those winning!

I realize that is a bit like comparing a bull dozer approach with the use of a precision drill, but certainly the bull dozer can, and in this case has produced the results … it just carries a hell of a lot of excess weight (risk) though - the $12,500 loss on his service in 2009 being the case in point.

Anyway, it was an interesting exercise, and here is a summary. I have based the $ return on my suggested strategy I apply to the PG MBA | FTJ service selections of each way betting and a starting bank of just $2,500 as to the $10,000+ bank it appears you would need to survive the runs of outs that Spartacus happens upon at times:

One very big difference, besides the huge disparity in POT and Win Strike Rate between the results for the two selection methods, is the starting bank on my wagering strategy is just $2,500.

I do recall that after all his great work for the betterment of his followers, ‘Spartacus the slave’ was crucified and died a slow and painful death. I certainly wish all the best for ‘Spartacus the tipster’ as he is obviously putting in a lot of effort to generate over 120 tips per month for taking that much exposure in the market. He and his clients deserve to stay in front. Good luck to all who follow him! I would be tempted myself to diversify if not for the excessive turnover and exposure of capital required … and the fact I believe I can get a better return on my investment elsewhere.

Oh, and by the way, congratulations if you are on the PG ES+ | PG TM5D+ service subscription, as the 2 wins from 3 selections on Saturday brings the profit for the year to exactly $1,700 on a starting bank of $2,500 and based on trading 3% on a fluctuating bank – at TAB prices. Given there have been just 13 selections so far this year for 6 wins, I think the $4.91 average win dividend is quite acceptable!

3 years of results available to download and review!

The PG Alpha | PG Silver combined subscriptions service finished the year on a downward trend, and unfortunately has started the year on the back foot with a lacklustre and, to be honest, a disappointing note.

In contrast, the PG MBA/FTJ subscription service has had a great start to follow on from a fantastic year in 2011! I will be updating these results shortly, but let me just highlight that 6 of the past 7 free selections have been from that service, with winners including 'Rio Spark' at $11+, 'Poetic Justice' at $6+ and 'Jest a Trace' at $3.70. $92,167 from a $1,000 starting bank!!

If you are not a patient person, best that you skip reading this. If you believe making a profit happens without paying attention to your bets and should happen overnight , skip reading any further...your approach is doomed to failure sooner than later!

BUT, if you are disciplined, record your bets (winners and losers) and you don't wager for the sake of having a bet, then you will be very interested to read further and see what my combined PG Alpha and PG Silver systems selections delivered over the past 3 years. Not one losing quarter in the past 3 years of trading.

There were losing months, and there were some long runs of outs. If you don't accept that as part of the process to investing in horse racing, then my services are not suitable for you. But, if you have patience, and are prepared to follow my recommendations, your bank will grow.

A simple horse racing system

I had a bit of time on my hands on Sunday while the family watched a fairly uninteresting movie. I chose to sit and watch an episode of one of my favourite BBC sitcoms (I have hundreds of unwatched movies and TV show episodes thanks to a friend who has a great collection) and 'played' with a basic premise that runners should have finished 4th or better at last start.

That basic filter is the crux of my PG Silver system (I relaxed that slightly for the PG Alpha system).

So anyway, I fiddled and played with a few filters in BetSelector. You don't need BetSelector to run the systems, as I looked at just basic form filters, but it certainly would be time consuming otherwise:

• race distance, field size, Last Start winners, first up runners, age, sex, TAB number, barrier, win and place performance, recent form, and distance and weight changes since last start

I considered just 7 venues. All of the form data is available freely on various Internet sites or from the better newspapers, or of course the system can be run in BetSelector.

The combined PG Alpha system and the PG Silver system selections(suggested WIN only betting) produced a 34.9% NET profit on bank over the past 10-weeks since the 21st September. During the past 26-weeks the systems have delivered a 94.5% NET profit on bank and for the past full year of trading the systems have cobined to deliver a 303.5% NET profit on the bank!

The system rule are precise and I currently consider just 4 Metropolitan venues on Saturdays.

I developed the system in 2004, and for it to be delivering very good results almost 8 years later is very satisfying!

BetSelector compatible systems

After a very frustrating 18-months of some big swings in fortune, I have reduced the systems I run on BetSelector to just one (with 41 parts to it)... and combined the best of the C4 system and the Combo systems, and deleted any filters that considered ratings of any kind. I found that dealing with BetSelector ratings, which seemingly have a life of their own and required constant monitoring during race days, were overall not adding to my bank. In fact, it has been quite the opposite.

Now a professional doesn't blame his tools, and I am still a strong advocate for BetSelector for data analysis, but it was my experience that trying to make a profit using ratings - for me at least - was not worth the effort.

With systems like PG Alpha and PG Silver in my arsenal, I really don't need anything else?!

News update: Thursday, 3rd November

PG ALPHA system

The month started a bit slowly, but ended nicely with 2 winners - 'Riziz' last Saturday paying $7.20 and 'Another Legend' on Sunday paying $3.80 - which closed the month out and meant that October gave a clear profit of 16 units! There were 31 bets with 9 wins at an average win dividend of $4.16 - and that is at TAB prices only.

Put in dollar terms, a win bet based on a $50 base unit would have covered almost 100% of the system cost in just 31 wagers. That is an excellent return on your investment for a system with ZERO ongoing costs and with rules that can be applied very easily from data available for FREE on numerous form websites.

PG Subscription service

The selections I include have done very well over the past 10 days in particular, with 49 units of profit! Admittedly, the results languished for awhile, but with another winner today for the only selection I sent to clients - 'Olivia Lass' paying $4.50 - it has been a very rewarding few days (in particular) to compensate for a very frustrating dead heat finish last Friday on a $21.oo starter at Ipswich.

News update: Sunday, 28th October

I had some great feedback on the email I sent five days ago in regard to wanting to add my suggested unit wager to the PG subscription selections. The short of it is that consensus was for me to get on with the job and focus on making a profit for clients, and if that entailed adding suggested wagers then that is what I should do.

Well, I have been doing that over the past 5 days, albeit conservatively to ensure clients ease into the concept of wagering 5% of the starting bank on some of my selections - such as 'Riziz' at Morphettville today paying $7.20!

I went easy on 'Morning Captain', but given I have separate banks for each of my systems / methods I backed both of the above winners with 5.0 units. Great day. The PG subscription service finished with 30 units of profit from today's trading, and a 45 unit profit for the week.

That would have been far more if we were not robbed by a dead heat finish with 'Tisani Star' on Friday starting at $20+ (and a lot higher result for BetFair users.) I wagered 5.0 units of my bank on him, but only suggested 2.0 units to clients as some would have baulked at putting 5% on a $21 starter!

I want to emphasis how important it is not to chop and change all the time between your subscription services and systems. A number of clients unfortunately chose to bail out of my service early in the week. I can understand that frustration probably played a hand in the decision to do so, but that decision cost them dearly!

I wish I could provide a smooth and constantly, week-to-week profit on my services but reality is not going to deliver that...no matter how hard I try.

Sometimes there will be variances to the monthly and quarterly PG subscription service, but generally the tips will be the same.

News update: Sunday, 23rd October

A number of clients have recently queried how I determine the unit weightings I have been suggested for the PG subscription service selections. Some were concerned about the 5.o units on some selections, while on others I have been suggesting 2.5 units or a small each way wager. Other clients were concerned about the outlay involved with the more aggressive 5.0 units outlay.

Given these selections are derived from my highly consistent PG Silver system – highlighted by today’s result from 6 selections (an unusual number of selections in one day I must admit), with 3 wins and 3 second places – I have more confidence on these selections so therefore give them a heavier weighting. However, as of today I have reverted to suggesting a simple 1.0 unit for the win, although I still follow the below weighting scale for the individual system selections on my personal banks, as I had allocated a 100 unit starting bank to each system:

PG Silver – 5.0 units for the win
PG Alpha – 2.5 units for the win

The other selections for the PG subscriptions service come from my PG MBA system, which basically follows the form of jockeys and has a 45% WSR and 153% POT this year, and the tried and true PG TipMatrix system which gave ‘Gypsy Jack’ and ‘Darci Be Good’ last week.

Now, that has meant that since the 18th of September to trading this afternoon - with 'Shadow Buster' at Sunshine Coast winning at $5.10 - I am 36 units in front of clients who were trading just 1 unit on all selections during that period, and that is despite a terrible run last week.

That irks me for two reasons. First and foremost, clients are not taking full advantage of what I am delivering and so leaving profits behind. Secondly, I am out of pocket as based on a single unit wager per selection the service went backwards in profit so I am unable to keep any of the subscription fees given my 'No profit - No fees' policy.

That has too change, and soon!

I really would like to hear from clients as to what is preferred. Profits - which obviously require a slightly higher outlay and risk - or a continual up and down and basically treading water with single unit bets.

Please let me know? Today's winner was a 5 unit wager for me!
